What Was the Challenge?
Australian law firms are approaching a genuine inflection point. Generative AI is starting to reshape how legal work is researched, drafted, reviewed and priced, while clients are demanding more transparent, technology-enabled service. At the same time, the firm still needed rock-solid operational IT — secure practice management, reliable document and matter systems, mature cyber, and a partner-grade end-user experience across multiple offices.
The previous technology leadership had been weighted toward “keeping the lights on”. The partnership recognised the next CIO had to do both: run a high-performing IT function and lead a credible AI transformation agenda, without falling into hype or risking client confidentiality.
How Did I Approach This Search?
I was retained on an exclusive basis and ran a focused domestic search across Australia. I worked closely with the Managing Partner, COO and key practice group leaders to reframe the position description around the convergence of traditional IT leadership and AI-enabled digital transformation — operational excellence, cyber and risk maturity, modern legal platforms, data foundations and a pragmatic AI roadmap aligned to fee-earner workflows.
From there, I mapped the Australian market for CIOs with proven track records in professional services and regulated environments, who had also led credible AI and data transformation programmes. I managed the full process end-to-end: market mapping, headhunting, candidate vetting, partner panel interviews, references and offer negotiation.
What Results Were Achieved?
The firm appointed a CIO with the rare blend of operational IT discipline and AI transformation credibility the partnership needed. The new leader is consolidating the foundations — cyber, platforms and service performance — while building a pragmatic AI agenda focused on legal research, document automation, knowledge management and matter pricing.
The placement was backed by my standard 6-month replacement guarantee.
